Introduction
Fencing is an elegant form of sport that came to us from many centuries ago.
Fencing is regarded as a noble form of sport and helps the child to develop the traits that are useful and practical in day-to-day life such as: ability to analyze surrounding situations and make decisions quickly; it also develops persistence and a strong will.
Fencing is suited for both genders and anyone can achieve great results.
Why fencing?
This sport cultivates both physical and intellectual skills at the same time. It develops agility and quick analytical thinking. Fencing teaches the player to always be aware of the surroundings and be able to predict the next move of the opponent. Once the opponent’s tactics have been carefully observed and analysed, the player then decides on the winning strategy.
Fencing is a trauma-free sport and brings the following benefits to the body:
- Facilitates cardio-vascular and respiratory training
- Has positive effects on nervous system: emotions that are being released during a duel allow the body to cope with daily stresses, anxieties, and bad mood
- Whole body workout
- Develops self control, coordination, dexterity, and agility.
Main aspects of lessons
This fencing-themed physical education program is designed to increase child’s interest in the physical self-development. Unlike the majority of other sporting activities that are competitive and goal oriented (i.e., levels, ranks, etc.) and may cause various injuries, our program’s goal is a comprehensive and balanced physical development of our students. This includes:
- Careful and gradual increase of physical exertion that is based on individual abilities of each child
- Each lesson begins with a warm-up that incorporates various gymnastic elements (i.e., jogging, jumping, push-ups, squats, etc.) as well as games
- Ensuring the correctness of breathing
Learning of the attack and defence moves will be performed in a playful manner. For the first 3-4 months the moves will be studied in a contactless way.
To ensure the safety and to eliminate any risk of injury, we use light, soft materials as fencing equipment. As such, this eliminates the need for costly protective gear (helmets and fencing jackets).
Fencing is a beautiful, elegant, and romantic sport!
Conclusion
The described above form of physical education increases student’s interest physical self-development which consequently strengthens the overall health and wellbeing of each child.
