Eight Reasons Why Your Child Would Be Happy In Our Kindergarten Programme

1. Children learn best through playing.

By engaging in games, children begin to read, count, sort and use patterns. At the ages of four and five, the primary educational focus is play-based at Erudite School.

2. Morning is the best time for academic subjects.

Our mornings are set aside for English and French, Reading and Writing along with Math and Science.

3. Circle Time is a fun way to engage students into discussions.

During Circle Time each day, our students participate in group discussions related to the topics they have learned.

4. The time spent outside is an important part of the daily schedule.

A conveniently located park is our source of daily adventures. Our students enjoy fresh air, good company and the playground.

5. Hot nutritious lunches are available to order.

Our students have the opportunity to enjoy a hot two-course lunch (main meal) if ordered through Full Cup Catering. It has been our wonderful culinary partner for four years. All of the food is prepared from scratch to provide tasty and fresh food for our students. Children are welcome to bring their own lunches, if they wish. We have a kitchen in the school that is equipped with a fridge. For hot food, children must bring thermoses from home.

6. There is a designated nap time after lunch.

After the lunch break, you may hear a lullaby or a piano gently playing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars" to the youngest students of our school. Our kindergarten class has the opportunity to nap in a secluded, shaded area in our school.

7. Each child has an Individual Learning Map.

After rest time, the children have an opportunity to play with their friends. This grants teachers the opportunity to work with children individually in a programme based on individual needs.

8. Sports and Art are the closing acts of the day.

The children finish their days with either Sports or Arts. They sing, paint, play musical instruments, participate in drama among other activities.

Elementary School Featured Subjects Overview

English

The English course will cover key topics, with a focus on grammar and appropriate writing style. Word origin and structure will be the main topic for the first term, helping students see the building blocks of meaning. Sentence structure, syntax and logic will be the main focus for the second term, with particular attention toward correct verb usage. Writing voice and style conventions will be covered in the final term, allowing the students to create original writing with better skills and more confidence.

Literacy development is the goal of English language curriculum. Literacy learning is a communal project and the teaching of literacy skills is embedded across the curriculum.

However, it is the language curriculum that is dedicated to instruction in the areas of knowledge and skills – listening and speaking, reading, writing, and viewing and representing – on which literacy is based.

Mathematics

Here is a striking figure. Only 61% of elementary school students in Ontario were at or above the provincial standard for Math in the 2017-2018 school year.

Our goal at Erudite School is to follow the Ontario curriculum and to enrich it with assorted mathematical activities:

  • mental math
  • speed math
  • word problems
  • mathematical reasoning tasks
  • critical thinking tasks
  • tasks from tests for the Gifted
  • problems from International Math contests

Each class in the elementary division has five to six hours of Math per week.

We believe that the best way to learn Math is by solving various problems. When students discover something on their own, they understand it much better.

We prepare students for several Math Contests that benefit both participants and non-participants in the contests.

At Erudite School, we have Math inspired crafts which develop the students' spatial skills. Spatial aptitude tests are a considerable part of many specialized tests (eg. tests for the Gifted, SSAT, among others) so it is crucial to develop these skills early.

During the lessons, the children work on the development of critical thinking; reasoning, classifications, developing computational thinking, working with sequences, developing and following algorithms. Materials from the Gifted test preparations are utilized.

Science. Physics

The general purpose of the programme:

  1. Acquisition of knowledge about the fundamental physics laws and principles that underlie the modern physics picture of the world;
  2. Intellectual development of interests and creative abilities in the process of knowledge and skills in physics using various sources of information and modern information technologies;

Extended French Programme Toronto
Science. Biology

The core topics will correspond to the provincial curriculum; however, more emphasis will be put on the use of mathematical methods in problem-solving and hands-on activities.

Experimental work will be included in variety of forms; simple lab experiments, field trips, videos, etc.

We have studied in 1st term three Kingdoms: Bacteria, Archaea and Protists.

We have discussed their cells and organelles, linking specific structures to their adaptive values.

We have studied evidence that suggests how the eukaryotic cell evolved from its prokaryotic ancestor.

We have learned about important roles microorganisms and algae play in ecosystems and how humans use them.

In the winter and spring semester, we are going to elaborate on the structure and equilibrium of ecosystems. We'll study how essential elements are cycled between the biota and abiota and how each segment of the ecosystem, including humans, can disturb the equilibrium.
